In Indiana, it’s warm-sunny within the summer and cold-snowy within the winter. But in Spring and Fall, it’s in-between these 2 extremes. Sitting within the sun on the deck in March at 55 degrees is wonderful. The warm sun shine causes it to be think that summer. Also if you have a grille, you wouldn’t like it underneath the roof. Letting the smoke lift in to the sky is a bit more preferable for most of us as opposed to letting filter in to the house. Change the function of the deck as seasons change. How the deck is employed in spring, summer, and fall ought to be considered inside your design. For our house, within the summer, The pool is placed within the sunny area of the deck, while seating and dining is within the shaded area of the deck. In fall and spring, the pool is slowly removed, along with the seating and dining tables will be in the sunny parts of the deck. Having a roof above the deck also keeps weather off items under the deck. This will be the area for bicycles, lawnmowers, scrap lumber, saw horses, and other bulky items normally found in the garage. Most people need a 3 car garage simply to have 1 bay from the garage for storage. Instead of building a third garage bay, put the products under the deck.
